The St. Joe County Conservation District
Board of Directors Welcomes Carol Higgins!

Carol Higgins was elected to the St. Joseph County Soil Conservation Board of directors on January 21, 2010 during the Annual Meeting.  She was born and raised in St. Joseph County and has lived in the area her entire life.  She is the oldest of eight children and represents the fourth generation of her family to farm in the Mendon area.  During her tenure as a partner of Maple Shade Farms, the farm was awarded “Farm Managers of the Year” from MSU and “Conservation Farm of the Year” from the Soil Conservation District.  She is still known to some as the “Strawberry Lady” from many years of raising berries for “you pick” and roadside sales.

Carol earned a BS from Nazareth College and an MA from Western Michigan University, and taught school and coached middle school sports in Marcellus for 17 years. She was recognized as “Cass County Conservation Teacher of the Year” in the 1990’s.  She retired in 2004 and currently is co-owner, with her husband Larry Higgins, of Arrowhead Cove Bed and Breakfast on Portage Lake.

Carol also serves on the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management Committee, works as a substitute teacher, and publishes “The Mendon Buzz” for the Mendon Community Schools.

She is the mother of three daughters and three step-children; four of whom are married. She and her husband have six grandchildren.

Carol is anxious to support programs that will conserve and preserve our natural resources for the health of sentient beings living today and tomorrow.

Welcome Carol!
